Are you a whiz in the kitchen and looking for some healthier treat options for your pet to try? Try your hand at creating some homemade treats not only made with clean ingredients you select, but also LOVE. Here are 5 recipes to help you create your own dog treats at home:

1. Yogurt and Banana Treats

This delicious treat not only has simple ingredients, but is also easy to make. Healthy, grain-free and refreshing – the ideal treat for your pup during the hot summer months or any time of the year.

Ingredients

  • 16 ounces plain Greek yogurt
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons natural unsweetened peanut butter (without xylitol, which is toxic to dogs)
  • 1 medium banana , sliced

Instructions

  1. Place silicone molds on a baking sheet (this helps transfer them easily to the freezer without spilling.) Set aside.
  2. Put all of the ingredients in the bowl of a food processor; blend until combined and creamy.
  3. Transfer to a measuring cup with a spout, for easy pouring.
  4. Fill each slot to the top with the mixture.
  5. Place in the freezer for about 3 hours or until solid.
  6. Gently release the frozen treats out of the molds and watch your doggie gobble them up!

2. Carrot Cake for Dogs

Are you a Carrot Cake kinda person? Share your guilty pleasure with your pup by making them this tasty treat!

Ingredients

  • 1 cup applesauce (plain, unsweetened, without any additives)
  • 1/4 cup almond butter or peanut butter (raw and natural, unsalted and unsweetened, and free of any flavors and xylitol)
  • 2 large eggs
  • 4 cups oat flour (plus 1/2 cup more if necessary and for dusting)
  • 1 cup grated carrots (peeled first)
  • 1/2 cup coconut flakes (unsweetened natural)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper; set aside.
  2. In a large bowl, using a handheld electric mixer, beat the applesauce, almond butter, and eggs together until blended.
  3. Add in the oat flour, carrots, and coconut flakes until just incorporated. (If you pinch a piece and it crumbles, add a little water. If it’s really sticky, you’ll need to add a little more oat flour, 1/4 cup at a time and not exceeding 1/2 cup. You want the dough slightly tacky, but not overly.)
  4. Transfer the dough to a surface lightly sprinkled with oat flour and knead 3-4 times until it comes together.
  5. Using a rolling pin sprinkled with oat flour, roll out the dough to a 1/2-inch thickness.
  6. Using cookie cutters, cut out the desired shapes and transfer to the prepared baking sheet.
  7. Place in the oven and bake until the treats are dry and edges are golden, about 18-20 minutes.
  8. Let cool completely.

3. Sweet Potato Chews

Looking for a healthier alternative to rawhide to give your pup? These sweet potato Chews will for sure have them coming back for more without being hard on their tummies!

Ingredients

  • 2 sweet potatoes of yams

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 250 degrees f. Wash and dry your sweet potatoes. Thinly slice your potatoes length-wise. 1/4- 1/3 inch wide max.
  2. Place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment if you have it. I was all out this time so I just placed them directly on the cookie sheet. Then bake them for 3 hours, turning them over halfway through. You want them to be pretty chewy and dry. You can also use a dehydrator if you have one instead.
  3. Store them in the fridge or freezer because if you leave them out they could get moldy.
  4. Then the real fun begins……giving them to your dog.
